Orangetown is one of five towns of Rockland County, New York. It is located along the Hudson River. The Tappan Zee Bridge, which links Rockland and Westchester, passes through the town. Orangetown is located only about 15 miles away from New York City, particularly, the Bronx and Manhattan. Bergen County, New Jersey is at the southern border of Orangetown.

According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000 Orangetown has a population of more than 47,000 residents. The town has a total area of 31.4 square miles with 7.2 square miles of water. It is located at an elevation of about 100 feet above sea level. Lake Tappan, which also flows into nearby New Jersey, is the biggest body of water in Orangetown. The town is home to Blauvelt State Park and Tallman Mountain State Park.

The racial demographics of Orangetown are 83.97% White, 5.88% African American, 0.11% Native American, 6.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 1.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are 6.02% of the population. Orangetown has more than a dozen total communities.

Orangetown has more than 17,000 households, many of which are affluent. The median income for a household in the town is $70,477, and the median income for a family is $87,341.

Orangetown is home to three private higher education facilities, Dominican College, Saint Thomas Aquinas College and Nyack College. The town is served by two school districts, Pearl River School District and South Orangetown Central School District.

Orangetown is home to two major historic sites. Camp Shanks is where more than 1 million US soldiers were processed during World War II before being shipped off to Europe. De Wint House, is the oldest standing structure in Rockland County and it served as headquarters for George Washington during the American Revolution.

Orangetown is home to major business areas, including Blue Hill Plaza, Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile, Bradley Corporate Park, and a Wyeth complex.

The town is home to multiple Golf Courses/Country Clubs, including Blue Hill Golf Course, Rockland County Club, and Broadacres Golf Course.

The Rockland Psychiatric Center is located in Orangetown.
